Besides entertaining, the purpose of fiction writers is to create circumstances in this or another world that could be ours as well as characters who could be you and I. While reading we find ourselves in the shoes of one or more of the characters, and by the end of a story our perception of at least one issue in life should be a bit broader and our insight a bit deeper. Reading fiction indeed increases our knowledge and wisdom.

Life is a process of learning. To live is to learn what others already know or still may learn. People are natural learners and teachers. Instinctively we teach others the lessons we have learned, either by word or by example. An indisputable fact, however, is that we don’t want to be taught by others, we prefer living our own lives – the trial-and-error method. Considering this, writing stories is the ideal way to transfer knowledge and wisdom.

Writers offer us the opportunity to live in the shoes of fictive characters much more of life than what we can live in our own shoes.

Although all of us are not born writers, we all have experiences worthy to share with others.
